Mayor’s Note: Playground Closures

Re: Actions to limit the spread and impact of Covid-19 in the Village of Athens.

As we have heard from both Federal and State governments we still have significant risk of spread of Covid-19.  In the Village of Athens we have a large “at-risk” population and it is the responsibility of all of us to do our part to keep our entire community safe.

Perhaps the most important recommendation for our small community is to stay at home whenever possible. And practice social distancing at all times in public. This has been clearly demonstrated to slow the spread of this virus.

Despite the constant government communications, I continue to see gatherings of people not heeding these warnings.  I absolutely sympathize with those who are cooped-up at home with small children, but use of public playground facilities is a clear violation of the States guidelines:   “Individuals should limit outdoor recreational activities to non-contact and avoid activities where they come in close contact with other people”.

As a result I will be closing the Village public playgrounds and ball courts effective immediately. They will remain closed through the month of April.  While the riverside and dog parks will remain open, the Village Police will be routinely checking to ensure social distancing is honored by everyone.

Even if you do not feel that you are at risk from this virus you can unwittingly spread it to someone who is.  Taking simple, personal measures to protect yourself is crucial to protect everyone around you.  Please, stay safe and honor the social distancing guidelines in the Village.

Thank you and stay safe!

Mayor Stephan Bradicich

  1. Thank you for doing this. We’ll all live through having the playgrounds closed.
There is plenty to do at home for now.
