Call For Members: Conservation Advisory Council

Dear Neighbors,

During the June 10th board meeting, the Athens Village Board (VB) passed local law number 4 of 2020 creating a Conservation Advisory Council (CAC).

The CAC is a new committee to advise the VB on environmental issues such as: trees in the Village and Village certification as Climate Smart Community in addition to other environmental matters as they arise.

The VB is looking for six Village resident volunteers to serve one or two year initial terms on the CAC. One CAC member should be under the age of 30 and members may serve up to four terms. Meeting frequency and times will be determined by the CAC chair, who will be selected by the Mayor after the CAC is formed.

If you are interested in being considered for membership on the CAC, please send a one to two page letter to the Village Board by July 20, 2020 with the following information:

      • name
      • address
      • phone number
      • email address
      • your interest in working on the CAC
      • as well as any background in environmental sciences, civil engineering, environmental law, land use planning or other area related to the mission or scope of the CAC
      • your experience working cooperatively in collegial groups or committees
      • any other information you think would be helpful

Letters may be mailed to Athens Village Board, 2 First Street, Athens, NY 12015 or emailed to the Village Clerk.

For more information:

      • the Village law establishing the CAC
      • information from NYS DEC, which supports CACs
      • you may also contact Village Trustee Dr. Josh Lipsman.

Thank you,

Athens Village Board

    1. I appreciate your concern, but the law only states that one member “should” be under 30. This was discussed at the public hearing and changed to reflect that it is not necessary, but would be good to have youth input concerning climate issues. -Amy Serrago
