Library Board and Budget Election 2020

D.R. Evarts Library Upcoming Budget and Board Election On November 18th

D.R. Evarts Library in Athens will hold its election of trustees and library budget vote on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at the Athens Firehouse, 39 Third St., Athens, from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. The purpose of the vote is to approve the 2021 budget of $133,151.27, which is an increase of 2% or $2,610.81, over last year and elect trustees to the board.

Four incumbent candidates are running for six open trustee seats. The candidates are:

KATHY JACKSON is a retired Engineer from IBM. She offers weekly children’s programs at the Evarts Library for several years including STEM, MakerSpace and robotics. Kathy is also a program leader for 4-H. She’s a member of the Athens Community Garden Club, the Victorian Stroll committee and volunteers at EJ Arthur Elementary School. She has served as President of the Board for four years, leading the library’s efforts to make the Evarts accessible. Kathy gives the Evarts a great deal of her time and talent to the Athens community.

KATHERINE MONTAGUE believes that a library is so much more than just books. It can be the center of a community and can serve its citizens in many ways. She has extensive experience both as a volunteer and a director with non-profit organizations. She currently runs the library’s reading group, teaches sewing to young people and would like to continue to explore the possibilities of the library for another term as trustee.

BARBARA IRACI is pleased to offer her services again to the library, especially now as she better understands its role in the community during stressful times. She has been a resident of the Town of Athens for 20 years and has participated in many organizations in the roles of both member and officer, including the Athens Community Garden Club, Athens Victorian Stroll committee, St Patrick’s Pastoral Council and Ministries, Rivertown Senior Housing Board of Directors, Sleepy Hollow Lake Board of Directors and Environmental Control Committee. Her education includes undergraduate teaching certificates and a Masters Degree in Library Science. With the support of her community, she is looking forward to serving another term.

ASHLEY TUFTS is a former news producer turned public relations pro who is passionate about telling stories about inspiring leaders and organizations. Currently, she is Vice President for Corporate Affairs & Communications at American Express. She has a master’s degree in Media Management from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Public Relations from Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. As a Library Board Trustee, she would continue to help raise awareness of D.R. Evarts Library’s mission, programs and services that are accessible to the entire Athens community.

Registered voters who reside in the town of Athens and are in the Coxsackie-Athens or Cairo- Durham School Districts are eligible to vote.
