Please Note: Short term rental fire inspections will be conducted on the third Thursday of each month. Please call or email to schedule your inspection for one of those days. As a reminder, a fire inspection is needed for all short term rental (AirBnB etc.) units on an annual basis.

All new construction and most work done on existing buildings in the Village of Athens requires a permit. However, you should contact the code enforcement office before commencing work of any kind to be sure you have the proper approval.

In addition, Planning Board approval is required for exterior improvements or modifications within the Historic District, site plan reviews and subdivisions.

Also, all electrical work requires a licensed electrician! Contact the code enforcement office for a list of such individuals.
